PRP for Hair Restoration

Our PRP treatment is a safe, effective, and nonsurgical option to combat hair loss.

Slow the rate of your hair loss and grow new hair.

Thinning hair is a very common concern with many of our patients, both men and women. Hair loss can affect your level of confidence as well as your appearance, which is why we are excited to offer this treatment. For androgenetic alopecia, also known as male-patterned hair loss, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy is our first recommendation when it comes to hair restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is PRP?

PRP is a regenerative therapy associated with tissue healing and natural growth factors. It is commonly used in the treatment of hair loss in both men and women.

Your blood contains two main components: plasma and red blood cells. Plasma contains platelets and white blood cells, which are rich in growth factors. PRP is created from platelets within  a person’s own blood and in turn uses the body’s own restorative capability to regrow hair.

In the treatment of hair loss, the theory used in PRP therapy is that special cells are considered responsible for hair formation and growth (called the dermal papillae), which are stimulated by platelet-rich plasma.

PRP is used for a wide variety of regenerative treatments all the way from facial rejuvenation (the “vampire facial”) to hair restoration, and may also be used to treat orthopedic issues like frozen shoulder and tennis elbow.

How does it work?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, which is a highly concentrated group of human blood cells that can promote healing and new cellular growth.

PRP contains stem cells and growth factors that can stimulate cell growth, tissue repair, collagen growth, and healthy cell production, resulting in longer, fuller, and thicker hair regrowth when injected into the hair follicles.

We will draw a small amount of your blood in our office, similar to what you could expect when having blood drawn for lab tests. The blood is then rapidly spun in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the rest of your blood.

Anesthesia is used to minimize discomfort during treatment.

Then, the PRP is injected directly into your scalp with a micro-needling device to stimulate renewed blood supply and proper nutrients to your deprived hair follicles.

The microneedling pen allows for deeper penetration of PRP, amplifying the benefits of your hair restoration procedure.

Depending on the area treated, treatment can take 60 to 90 minutes.

Several treatments may be needed for the best possible results, and treatments should be spaced 3 to 6 months apart.

Since PRP is derived from your own blood cells, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction or other adverse effects.

What does the PRP treatment process look Like?

The process begins in our private, on-site lab with a standard blood draw from your arm. The blood is put into a centrifuge, which spins and separates the plasma from the red blood cells. This takes about 15-30 minutes.

That plasma is injected directly into the scalp, using a tiny needle to inject plasma at approximately every half inch over the area(s) of thinning hair. Depending on the size of your head and the amount of hair loss, this part of the treatment usually takes about 30 minutes.

Is PRP for hair restoration painful?

No. Most people report that it’s not at all painful and there’s not even a need for numbing medication. Cool air or ice can be used immediately following treatment and if there is in fact any discomfort, Tylenol is enough to reduce it.

Are there any side effects of PRP hair restoration treatment?

As PRP involves the use of your own platelets, adverse events are unlikely. Some people may experience minor bruising or discomfort following treatment.

Causes of Hair Loss

We all lose 50 to 100 hairs a day (on average), but because new hair is always growing at the same time, it isn’t usually noticeable. When new hair is no longer growing back in  to replace the hair being lost, it’s cause for concern.

Hair loss is usually related to one or more of the following factors:

  • Hormonal changes, such as low testosterone levels. This occurs gradually and in predictable patterns, like those seen in a receding hairline or bald spots. When testosterone levels decline, the normal cycle of hair growth changes. Some hair will begin to grow in shorter and  thinner, and in some spots, growth may stop  altogether.
  • Heredity. The most common cause of thinning hair is family history. It is a natural condition caused by some combination of aging, low testosterone levels, and genetics (a family history of baldness on the mother’s side of the family).
  • Medications. Some drugs like antidepressants, birth control pills, acne medications and immunosuppressants are thought to cause hair loss.
  • Stress. Physical or emotional trauma can cause hair to fall out.
  • Hairstyles. A hairstyle that pulls the hair tight (like cornrows and extensions) can cause unnecessary hair loss.<br>

Other factors that may increase your risk of hair loss include age, significant weight loss, diabetes, lupus and other autoimmune conditions, thyroid conditions, and poor nutrition.

How is hair loss treated?

Not all treatments for hair loss are effective. Since receiving FDA approval in 1988, topical minoxidil (Rogaine) has been the standard treatment for hair regrowth. In 1998, a generic and a 5% formulation of minoxidil was approved for over the counter sale. Although minoxidil is deemed effective, applying it daily can be inconvenient (especially for women).

How long does a series of PRP treatments take to produce results?

A series of PRP treatments for hair loss requires 3-4 treatments spaced several weeks apart. It should be repeated once every 6 months on an ongoing basis.

Can I go straight back to work?

The great thing about PRP is that little to no downtime is needed. You can safely return to your everyday activities immediately.

How will I know if the PRP is working to stop my hair loss?

The first thing you’ll notice while undergoing hair loss treatment with PRP is that there’s less daily shedding of hair. You may begin to see less hair coming out while brushing or being in the shower.

In 2019, a team of researchers compiled and reviewed 132 papers and 11 articles on PRP as a treatment for hair loss and published their findings in the journal Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

The short answer being  YES, patients who had PRP administered were definitely seeing new hair growth.
